10 Seriously Misjudged Video Game Levels That Almost Made You Stop Playing

2. The Evil Within 2's Flamethrower Boss

The Evil Within is a damn-near immaculate survival horror game. Its blend of over-shoulder Resi 4-like shooting and exploration is pure old-school 2000s horror, in a way we haven't seen since, well, the first Evil Within.

However, by being so by the book, it retains some of the same qualms I thought we'd left WELL behind. Mainly, the act of running out of ammo during any encounter and awkwardly gaming the A.I. so you can side-step attacks and get melee stabs in.

This comes to a head during the flamethrower boss's duel (whose real identity I'll keep a secret for the sake of spoilers). Literally seeing Sebastien devoid of ammo unless you'd been hoarding for many levels prior, the battle devolves into running around a giant square-shaped tunnel of an area, picking up the same respawning three bullets of handgun ammo before firing three shots and darting off again.

It feels so half-baked and ill-conceived when every other aspect of the game is supremely well paced and thought out. We're talking about the very idea of an open-world survival horror with story chunks resigned to discoverable locations on the one hand, being saddled with such outdated design on the other.
