10 Seriously Misjudged Video Game Levels That Almost Made You Stop Playing
4. Cuphead's First Run N' Gun Level
Now now, I'm not saying Cuphead's first level is bad. Far from it.
Instead, I'm saying if you're introducing the whole world to your brutally hard game of trial and error, restarts and perfect timing, maybe (according to achievement trackers) having only 62% of all players make it out the first area is a bit of a problem.
The issue stems from the very first level too - the first area you're given as what should be practice to get used to all the game's mechanics before tackling the showstopper bosses. Even here, Cuphead throws up an overly animated middle finger, as the screen is covered in enemies and projectiles to duck, weave and defeat. Chances are you'll die just trying to figure out where to go or from being lost behind some explosion of enemy-evaporating dust.
As a full game, Cuphead is immaculate, but as something that doesn't even attempt to cater to how its marketing invites a far more lighthearted tonality, this opening stretch can be an excruciatingly hard challenge.
