3. All That Remains - Dragon Age 2

Dragon Age 2 might not be the most popular Dragon Age game or even the second most popular Dragon Age game but it does some really interesting things and the nasty All That Remains quest is one of them.

Hawke is hunting a serial killer through Kirkwall who leaves white lilies at his victims homes as a calling card. Things get personal when Hawke’s own mother Leandra receives the threatening flowers and then goes missing. Your chase leads you to eventually discover your own mother has been cut to pieces in a bloodmage’s sickening plan to revive his dead wife. The reveal where she slowly turns around and you’re hoping against hope she’s somehow okay is incredibly rough and killing off the mage means losing your mother once again. The entire sequence is frankly heartbreaking.

It’s not particularly gory but it’s so disturbing and horrifying, it’s a tough one to get out of your mind.
