Modern Warfare 2 opened the door to portraying atrocities within gaming but Spec Ops; The Line took it one step further. Released in 2012 by Yager Development, this person shooter became widely praised for its narrative and themes.

Playing as Captain Martin Walker, you find yourself sent to a decimated Dubai where you battle with the 33rd Battalion and it’s commander, John Konrad. After a series of battles, the game ends with four possible conclusions. Realising what he’s done, Walker can either commit suicide or try and shoot Konrad.

If you tried the latter, Konrad disappears and Walker calls in the military. Upon being greeted by the patrol, you have two options. You can hand in your weapon peacefully and be taken away by them or fight them.

If you fight, failing to defeat them sees Walker dying in a pool of his own blood whilst recalling a conversation with Konrad. If you succeed, you then take their radio and speak with army command.

Featuring some harrowing moments, like Walker’s use of white phosphorus against the opposing 33rd Battalion to then discover they were actually civilians, it showed the horrors of war in a way we hadn’t seen previously and proved a powerful story.
