10 Simple Video Games That Are Too Brutal To Master

8. Dark Souls

Perhaps Dark Souls isn€™t impossible to master - in fact its basic animations and style of play is accessible on its face - but it is absolutely merciless. If you don€™t parry at the exact right moment, you€™re dead. If you challenge a boss before you€™re ready, or without a particular item, you€™re dead. If you take the wrong path, or tackle the catacombs without knowing how to prevent the skeletons from reanimating, you€™re dead. In fact, even if you already know these things, you€™re still going to die... a lot.

Dark Souls requires an almost insufferable amount of patience, and some impeccable timing. It requires you to learn from your mistakes, to treat death as a learning tool and to always come back for more. Of course, after the millionth death at the hands of the same boss, the realities of Dark Souls can easily wear a person down; it goes against human logic to embrace death so profusely, and to willingly suffer the same punishments continually.

The Undead Asylum is a fairly peaceful place, compared to the rest of the game. Sure, the Asylum Demon is a heck of a way to welcome new players, but he€™s certainly manageable. Afterwards, you€™ll feel downright elated, completely buzzing with confidence; you€™ll wonder why Dark Souls has such a reputation for difficulty. And then the rest of the game hits you like a halberd to the cranium.
