10 Smartest Horror Video Game Decisions
7. Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines – Keeping The Sarcophagus Closed
It might not be a horror title in the same vein as other entries but Bloodlines’ focus on the supernatural earns it a spot. Releasing in 2004 by Troika Games, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines became a cult classic, based off the tabletop RPG game from 1991 and a sequel is scheduled for release this year.
It enters a world of Vampire politics divided by three specific groups. The Camarilla, acting as government for any place they control, Anarchs looking to break free of their control and the Sabbat, which believe vampires should openly rule over humans.
Waking up as a fledgling after being sired by one of 7 playable bloodlines, your sire is staked and you're both taken to trial for breaking the Masquerade. This is led by Sebastain LeCroix, the Ventrue clan’s prince of Los Angeles and main antagonist.
Being spared by the intervention of Anarch clan’s Nines Rodriguez, you end up in the employment of LaCroix, who decides to send you on an investigation about an Ankaran sarcophagus, one that’s believed to be housing an ancient vampire.
Depending on who you allied with, the ending varies - and few are in your favour - but one thing you absolutely shouldn’t do is open the sarcophagus.
Whether you sided with LaCroix or opened it of your own will, it contains a bomb and a farewell note from one of the Anarchs, Smiling Jack, detonating soon after opening and taking you out with it. Undeniably, this was one mystery best left unanswered.
