10 Smartest Horror Video Game Decisions

2. Doki Doki Literature Club – Watching All The Optional Scenes

Until Dawn
Dan Salvato

Doki Doki Literature Club became highly popular amongst streamers when it launched in 2017. Disguised as a dating simulator, it’s set within a high school literature club where the protagonist is invited to join by childhood friend Sayori.

Beginning to write poems for her and fellow clubmates Natsuki and Yuri, it begins like any visual novel. Until you discover Sayori has hung herself. Doki then abruptly ends and upon being restarted, Sayori is conspicuously missing and no one remembers her, soon followed by even further deaths.

Now invited to join by Club President Monika, it becomes clear she’s not only manipulating the game but is self-aware that she’s a video game character, breaking the fourth wall and confesses her love for you, the player.

To stop her, you’ll have to delete Monika’s directory file within the system files but that alone isn’t enough for the best ending as Monika re-emerges, deleting Sayori again and corrupts the credits. Deleting Monika’s file before starting also doesn’t work, leading to a quick ending where Sayori still dies.

It may come naturally for completionists but the best ending requires you view each girl’s optional scenes in one playthrough, achieved by saving and reloading before witnessing Sayori’s suicide.

Doing this ensures Monika won’t reappear, Sayori thanks you for trying to make everyone happy and ends with a thank you letter from developer Dan Salvato. It’s the best ending you can hope for in this otherwise bleak Horror game.
