4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Don't look at me like that, it had to be on the list somewhere. The Call of Duty franchise may now be its own punchline to a joke that isn't even funny anymore, but the truth is that when Jason West and Vince Zampella changed up their WWII formula (against the wishes of Activision) they created a behemoth that's endured for a reason. Modern Warfare was so incredible, such a bold, new experience, that it would have been ludicrous to
not give it sequels. A joyous thrill ride of cool characters, exciting set-pieces (at a time before they were the eye-rolling status quo) and
that sniper mission. It also challenged perceptions of storytelling in games by killing off one of the characters you were playing as with a nuclear bomb, only halfway through the game. The new games are shit though, aren't they.
