10 Stupid Arguments About Grand Theft Auto That Make No Sense

7. GTA Glamorizes Crime & Gang Culture

The Argument: GTA is a game about men robbing, killing, getting laid and basically trying to build empires for themselves. The stories and gameplay are rooted firmly in the crime genre, and some feel that the game's flippant attitude to all the murder and debauchery causes them to glamorise the crime and gang culture at the heart of these titles. Are they sexing-up something that's morally reprehensible and making it seem like an appealing line of work for players? Why It Makes No Sense: As is a bullet-proof argument against much of the issues leveled against the series, GTA is supposed to be a satire, with its tongue lodged firmly in its cheek at almost all times. Sure, the game undeniably makes it feel totally bada** to kill everyone in your general vicinity, but the storyline also makes sure to undercut and mock the supposed "awesomeness" of being a violent criminal. Throughout the game, Trevor, Michael and Franklin are made to look extremely foolish and stupid (and in Trevor's case, insane), and each endures some pretty hefty personal costs in the pursuit of their huge fortunes. Sure, the characters are likeable to a point, but the message here certainly isn't one endorsing their behaviour: its purpose is simply to entertain, and frankly, who would buy these games if they had a wholesome message about how you shouldn't murder and steal? If The Wolf of Wall Street was about a wealthy philanthropist who lived modestly and was faithful to his wife, would anyone really want to watch it?
