Joel's tragic death in the opening hours of The Last of Us 2 sparked much debate in the video game sphere.

To many, it was a predictable occurrence that felt all too natural following the surprising events of the first game and how it concluded.

To others however, it was a shock the game never really recovered from.

The brutality of the act, paired with the game's attempt to humanise the culprit is something that many had an issue with, as Ellie and Joel's growing reliance on one another was the very thing that made the first game so special.

By killing its main character, The Last of Us Part II had huge shoes to fill with its main narrative, and though Ellie's quest for revenge takes up the game's first half, Abby's story is one that so many were reluctant to experience.

She was the reason that Joel and Ellie's fractured relationship became irreparable. By trying to get players to think about the consequences of their actions, those who took issue with the decision in the game's early stages found nothing in The Last of Us Part II's lengthy narrative to truly enjoy.
