10 Super Mario Facts You Probably Never Knew

4. The Ice Capades Once Dedicated An Entire Sketch To Mario

Mario - Ice Capades Mario is a big name in popular culture these days, what with all his cameo appearances €“ even Bowser had a moment spitting out tea in Wreck-It-Ralph. But did you know Mario once had an entire ice segment dedicated to him and his adventures? In 1989, Mario and his friends relived some classic moments in an Ice Capades show after the game mysteriously catches a virus, allowing the characters to come to life and skate. The show starts with King Koopa (better known now as Bowser) and his minions taking over the ice rink as they shut all gaming systems down with the €˜Koopa virus€™, before Princess Toadstool (aka Princess Peach) calls on the help of the Super Mario Bros. Flying into the rink, Luigi and Mario begin to dispel and eradicate all the Goombas, Koopa Troopers and Paratroopers from the ice, leaving just King Koopa and his Spiny. The final battle isn€™t all that explosive €“ unless you count the stage effects €“ and Mario and Luigi quickly take down King Koopa. Lapping up all the crowds€™ excitement, they are both given the purple plungers as rewards for saving the day from disaster. If the Ice Capades shows are ever resurrected, we hope they use less creepy costumes for their Mario sketch.

With a love for postmodern literature and black and white movies, Colette is a stickler for those artistic films with a weird and wonderful vibe. But she also loves her mainstream cinema and will devour any superhero movie like a comic-book nerd. She currently works as a news editor for a gaming website, specialising in all things Mario, and a film aficionado for What Culture.
