10 Surprisingly Great Multiplayer Modes In Single-Player Games

1. The Last Of Us

For a story masterpeice like The Last of Us to even have a multiplayer mode seems odd, but trust Naughty Dog to not just shoe-horn a mode in, but craft a great one as handily as Joel crafts nail bombs.

The Last of Us' multiplayer suite is robust; with a few different modes that feel starkly different to Uncharted. While that series' multiplayer is fast and frenetic shooting, The Last of Us' version is scaled back, slowed down, and befitting of the bleak and dangerous world you inhabit. In fact, The Last of Us' multiplayer stands out against most for being much more methodical and rewarding of patience.

Sneaking around the maps, distracting other players with bottles, and using The Last of Us' visceral gameplay was unlike anything else at the time and, to some extent, a precursor to the battle royale genre. The Last of Us married single-player and multiplayer in a way that few, if any, other games have managed to do.

It's truly a unique experience.
