10 Surprisingly Great Multiplayer Modes In Single-Player Games

2. Grand Theft Auto V

Who could ever have guessed that Grand Theft Auto V would be remembered for its multiplayer After a rocky launch, Rockstar turned GTA's online mode into a money-printing machine that has sustained the game for five years after launch. It's borderline incomparable.

Grand Theft Auto V is one of the greatest single-player games ever made. Some thought Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas offered too much customisation and too many inscrutable details like vomiting if you ate too much, and working out at the gym - guessing those same people weren't big on Red Dead 2 - while GTA IV then felt way too stripped back of the zany nature of GTA. So Grand Theft Auto V's campaign felt like a perfect mix of the two.

As years progressed though, the online mode provided the bananas. It progressed from a robust mode with lots to do like heists, to overflowing with content like partaking in one of the 200+ races using Tron cycles etc. It's massive, it's always active, it's pure fun and pure madness. Exactly what an online mode should be.
