10 Terrible Levels That Haunt Otherwise Perfect Video Games

8. Dream Sequence - Max Payne

Demonstrating that protagonist Max Payne was a tortured soul was apparently heavy on the agenda when the series began and has stayed the same every since. With the most recent Max Payne 3 this has been pretty well covered by the man's awful demeanour and mid-life crisis attire, but in the early days it wasn't as easy to do this successfully.

Payne's damaged psyche was represented in a few nightmare stages and players were forced to navigate their way through eerie dream sequences. The second of these was particularly bad, drawing virtually all tension out in favour of immensely frustrating level design.

Having players attempt to work their way through a blood trail maze and platforming section, veering even slightly from the line will see you fall to your death. Of course, this wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that the trail you have to follow was thicker than two pixels...

The fact that you can skip these on the iOS remake of the game does offer some suggestion that maybe mobile gaming really will take off one day!
