Sometimes you look back at what some marketing team thought would be the new hotness of the time, and it's just tragically hilarious, or hilariously tragic.

In Earthbound's case, Nintendo saw the burps, farts and body humour-filled delights of 90s kid humour, and designed an entire campaign around saying the game "stinks".

Besides the fact this has nothing to do with an otherwise stellar RPG featuring a bunch of kids protecting the world from an intergalactic force of evil, it meant magazines were filled with "scratch n' sniff" double-pagers, that would literally smell of farts, mouldy food, and other assorted "rude smells".

This could stink out your bedroom, bag or wherever you kept the magazine, completely burying Earthbound's reputation as millions of potential players thought it was a disgusting mess made for gross 8 year-olds, rather than the all-timer Earthbound still is.
