10 TERRIBLE Video Games (That Secretly Saved Franchises)
9. Assassin's Creed Unity
Assassin's Creed Unity is widely accepted to be the worst entry into the core franchise, for despite its attempts to innovate the series, it was clearly released before it was done cooking.
Unity was so rife with bugs and glitches that Ubisoft offered players both an apology and compensation, while the company was also widely criticised for the game's lack of gender options in its co-op multiplayer mode (which they infamously dubbed "a lot of extra production work").
The intense backlash to Unity evidently gave Ubisoft a swift kick up the back side in a number of ways.
First and foremost, every subsequent Assassin's Creed game has released in a decidedly more polished state, while the series has also ditched the concrete annual production cycle, periodically waiting two years between some titles.
This not-so-coincidentally led to recent games Origins and Odyssey scoring some of the strongest reviews of the entire series.
And as a cherry on top, Odyssey also introduced full gender options, with the promise that this feature will remain in every future Assassin's Creed game.
As frustrating as Ubisoft can be as a company, they clearly took the near-universal disdain for Unity to heart, and the franchise has arguably never been better as a result.
