10 Terrible Video Games With Awesome Openings
7. Halo 5: Guardians
Halo 4 left things on a cliffhanger and fans were all hungry to see where the series was going next. As interesting as Master Chief John-117 was becoming as a character, more than just a hardened super-soldier, there was definitely room for new faces by the time Halo 5: Guardians came around.
Thus, the game kicks things off with its shiny new group Fireteam Osiris. The squad is made-up of characters from Halo books, a short film and Buck returning from Halo 3 ODST and it promised to bring the games closer to the extended universe.
The opening cinematic briefs the SPARTANs who, accompanied by an incredible piece of heart pounding music, drop into the action. Exceptional visuals guide us down to the surface as ships explode. Sliding down a snowy mountainside, our new team kick alien ass and don’t ask for names.
The mission that follows is probably one of the best of the game too, so that helps.
But Halo 5’s campaign story not only did very little with the extended universe, it did very little with anything. Master Chief was far too absent and the story meandered the entire way to its generic conclusion. This exciting start belays a campaign that feels safe, lifeless and extremely by the numbers.
