10 Terrifying Monsters From Non-Horror Video Games

1. Vortex Queen - Ecco The Dolphin

Honestly, you could probably fill this list alone with scary things from Ecco the Dolphin.

A game about a cute dolphin has absolutely no business being as utterly terrifying as it is.

Whether it's the bleak, open waters, the terrifying monsters that inhabit it, the awful screaming sound Ecco makes when he's hit, or just the unsettling soundtrack, everything about Ecco was so ridiculously scary. Particularly if you were a little kid, unsuspectingly popping it into your Mega Drive!

The scariest thing of the lot though? Well, that honour goes to the absolutely hideous floating alien head that serves as the game's primary antagonist (and the game's last boss too). Yep, it's the horror that is the Vortex Queen.

With a weird, unhinged jaw and a penchant for trying to suck you in towards it, the ability to spawn terrifying alien Vortex drones, as well as terrifying sound design, everything about it is completely unsettling from the first time you even see it.

Even the fact that it takes place in what is essentially a black void under the sea makes this boss fight even more terrifying.
