There's not really a part of Frictional Games's breakthrough hit that isn't absolutely terrifying, quite frankly. Which probably means that the developers succeeded at what they were going for, but going from the amount of reaction videos on YouTube (and the amount of screams heard in those videos), gamers probably aren't going to congratulate them on that. And certainly not thank them. Besides building up a wonderfully tense atmosphere the mechanics of Amnesia: The Dark Descent are essentially - monsters are after you; you stay in the shadows to hide, but doing so drives you insane with worry; you can steady yourself by going towards lights, but then monsters can see you - which really cinches it as a horror classic. One moment in particular has really stuck in the memory (or perhaps nightmares) of everybody who's played the game, though. Remember that light is a big deal in keeping your cool in the game? Well for this section there are none of those trusty torches for you to seek solace under, and your lantern's probably out of gas from the preceding puzzle. So you have to leg it through the darkness, from an invisible monster, opening and slamming doors behind you as the only thing audible above your heavy breathing is some... THING. Lawks.
