Those are all fairly solitary experiences, though. In fact, they work all the better for it, since for all their differences the horror game is best taken in the same way as a film, story or, yes, chocolate: alone, at night, with all the lights switched off, your headphones plugged in for ultimate immersion and - if you're really daring - an empty house. All of which helps you to truly get into the head of the character you're playing and, consequently, absolutely petrify yourself when all the scary stuff starts happening to said player. Nowadays the single player game is becoming a little old hat, with the online multiplayer taking precedence. Thankfully, this doesn't mean the end of scary games. Far from it, if Left 4 Dead is anything to go by. For rookies trying to get into the game now the biggest terror might be coming across some charitable seasoned players willing to team up with a nerd, but there's one thing that every player of Valve's first-person zombie shooter fears: The Witch. This enemy is pretty jarring to look at, but even worse is that you'll hear her coming long before you see her.
