10 Terrifyingly Dark Implications In Otherwise Cheerful Video Games

7. The Gyroids - Animal Crossing

When you dig up your first gyroid, your reaction is likely either confusion or amusement, depending on how excited you are to see the little guy.

Most people understandably can't really place the strange little statue figures, and since they just seem to be little terracotta friends who can dance about, you don't question it further than popping one in your room to spruce things up.

But the Gyroids are actually based on clay figures known as Haniwa, which were buried with the dead. This raises some immediately obvious implications - namely, that you've sort of just done a spot of accidental grave robbing.

In fact, you could have picked up countless Gyroids before discovering what they actually are, making that room you keep full of them just a touch more creepy than you'd maybe intended for it to be.

It's a strange mix, because on one hand you have a creation that is essentially meant to contain the soul of the deceased, and on the other you have the fact that they dance real nice and sing along to your radio in some games. So they're both unsettling, and also pretty decent company, if you want them around.
