10 Terrifyingly Dark Implications In Otherwise Cheerful Video Games
2. Gruntilda Lives - Banjo-Tooie
Aside from the huge nightmarish robot shark known as Clanker, Banjo-Kazooie was largely an unthreatening, child-friendly game - with occasional moments that might make you develop some weird fear as a child, but nothing worse than the Legend of Zelda was dishing out.
As such, when Banjo-Tooie rolled around, you likely didn't think too hard about the first game, only really remembering that you defeated the evil witch Gruntilda to save the day. Only, the details of this are actually really important, as specifically when you take her out, you leave her trapped under a boulder, unable to get out from under it.
We're explicitly told that the entire two years between the first game and the sequel saw Gruntilda trapped the whole time. While you can say that this might have been fine because she's both a cartoon and magical, she's turned into a skeleton by the second game, which suggests pretty heavily that these two years have sucked for her pretty intensely.
Gruntilda's still a villain in Tooie, sure, but you can't help but feel for her given she apparently rotted away under a boulder and nobody thought that was a little cruel.
