10 Things Alien: Isolation Will Do Better Than Aliens: Colonial Marines

8. The Environment

While Alien was the first - and thus central - movie in the Alien series, it was James Cameron€™s Aliens that had the greatest influence in the way popular culture perceives the franchise. As a result, pretty much every Alien game has been based on the aesthetic qualities of that film, and it has gotten pretty boring. Combine that with the fact that every sci-fi military shooter has been influenced by it too, and it€™s no surprise that Colonial Marines didn€™t stand out when it came to its environments - it didn€™t help that they looked just as shoddy as the rest of the game. The developers of Isolation had the good sense to base the environmental design of the game on the first film, which had a style to it that has strangely never been used in an Alien game before. This untapped potential is a huge contributing factor to the excitement so far. For the first time, we get to explore a world based entirely on the 70s industrial space-aesthetic the first film birthed. This low-tech future world is so original despite being over 30 years old, and it is about time we got an Alien game based on that. It should go a long way into enhancing the more survival-horror driven gameplay.
