10 Things Alien: Isolation Will Do Better Than Aliens: Colonial Marines
5. Respecting The Alien
Perhaps the greatest failing of Colonial Marines was the disrespect it had towards the title creature. The Alien is one of the greatest fictional creatures ever, and the way in which Colonial Marines literally threw them at the screen for the player to mow down was a disgrace. They displayed no sense of intelligence or self-preservation - the ultimate killing machine was reduced to a mindless drone with no autonomous thought. In the opposite direction is Isolation, which looks to remind us why we should fear this monster. By having only one Alien in the game, there is no way it can be killed until the end of the game. It is the big bad boss; the one thing you absolutely do not want to encounter in close proximity. Everyone on the space station fears it because there is nothing they can do to bring it down, and it actually uses intelligence and awareness to manoeuvre around the environment to its advantage. This is how a proper digital rendition of an Alien should act; it should not be something that you can kill hundreds of with reckless abandon. Colonial Marines cheapened one of the greatest icons of horror, and Isolation looks like it will restore it to its former glory. And even if it doesnt quite make the mark, it is certain to still do a better job.
