10 Things Nintendo’s Best Video Games Can Teach Pokémon Sun & Moon
7. Build A More Accessible 3D World - Super Mario Galaxy
From its humble origins in 8-bit, through to the brand new perspective afforded by Nintendo's 3DS device, the aesthetics of a Pokémon game have continually improved in line with what we hope and expect. There's still one thing that hasn't really changed in the worlds, though, and it's really time that this was addressed.
Pokémon games have always been very flat affairs. Of course there are mountains and multi-level caves to explore across the regions, but there's never been much of a sense of perspective given for very long. The very fact that tiny ledges are still non-traversable from certain angles is majorly frustrating; obviously this is partly related to HM moves, but it also still feels like a hungover side effect from older generations.
Super Mario Galaxy may be an extreme example of how to employ a fluid 3D world into a platformer game, but a toned down interpretation would still be welcome. Having players be able to jump small ledges and climb as effectively as an adventurous youth does would be a major boost to the exploration in the game and would make players feel eminently more involved in the proceedings.
