7. You've Always Wondered What Playing The Virtual Boy Would Be Like

One us always hesitant to use the word, but even when Nintendo 'fails', it still often has something interesting or salvageable from the project. As such, the Virtual Boy, an early foray into 3D display for gaming, is regularly derided as a strange and nonsensical headache-inducing console.

It was difficult to play unless sat at a desk and there was little chance of multiplayer enjoyment or marathon gaming stints. There are a few titles of note to the Nintendo purist, however, including Wario Land and Mario's Tennis. The red-and-black colour scheme put an end to most players enjoying the system, however, and it didn't ever move beyond niche appeal an a fairly crowded marketplace.

It would have been interesting to see if green on black would have worked a la 1980s computer display screens since black on green worked so acceptably for the original Game Boy until the release of the Game Boy Color in 1998. Alas, it was not to be.

Bryan Langley’s first console was the Super Nintendo and he hasn’t stopped using his opposable thumbs since. He is based in Bristol, UK and is still searchin' for them glory days he never had.
