10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Final Fantasy VII

1. The Honey Bee Inn Could Have Been Much, Much Worse

An early event in Final Fantasy VII sees Cloud dressing up as a woman in order to enter Don Corneo's Mansion. Yep, you read that correctly. Anyway, there's a variety of optional items to gather during this sequence and some can be found in the Honey Bee Inn; the most disturbing location in any Final Fantasy game to date. Based around the idea of a Japanese 'love hotel', the Honey Bee Inn is full of sordid individuals and girls dressed in bee costumes. Cloud is offered a choice of two rooms with two different events (one sees him conversing with himself before blacking out; the other has a group of men force Cloud into a bath with them); at the end of whichever event is picked, Cloud is given a piece of underwear, presumably to use in his disguise. It's all pretty weird, to tell the truth. It could have been so much worse though. There's a load of content which was cut from the events in the Honey Bee Inn; according to co-writer Kazushige Nojima, many staff members felt this content was far too extreme for the game. The cut content varies from extra rooms within the inn to whole scenes, such as Palmer (one of Shinra's head honchos) emerging from the Inn and calling it "refreshing". Nice. There's an even more disturbing series of events though. A guy in the waiting room is waiting for Tifa to return; in the cut content, he can hand Cloud a 'key item' - the 'Mystery Panties'. It is heavily implied that this guy actually took these from Tifa's room in her bar; it's pretty easy to see why this stuff was cut. Exploring the Honey Bee Inn in the full release will leave you feeling a bit dirty; had all this cut content been included, we might have been seriously traumatised.
