3. Tifa Calls Barret A Retard

Upon arriving at the building, the player is offered two choices - fight their way in through the front doors or sneak around the side and find a quieter entrance. Naturally, most people will be hungry for battle at this point and so will break in as violently as possible; taking the quiet stairs turns out to be a massive waste of time. It takes absolutely ages to fully ascend the staircase but you are rewarded with some unique chat among the three party members. One line in particular is pretty shocking to read nowadays though and it comes from a highly unexpected source. As Barret continues to complain about the climb, Tifa says: "Would you stop acting like a retard and climb?" Can you imagine the furore if a video game featured a line like that nowadays? It's a completely out-of-character moment for Tifa who is often shown as the pleasant, calming core of the group. It could come down to translation errors (and given Square's poor record with translations, it could definitely be this) but it's still interesting to find a short scene showing a beloved character at their worst.
