10 Things We Desperately Want From Resident Evil 8
4. A Hearty Dose Of Camp
Capcom has doubled-down on the darkness and grit with the last three entries in the series, much to fan appreciation and critical praise, but is that truly what we want?
The Resident Evil series is undoubtedly at its best when it's fully embracing its roots and wearing its influences on its sleeve.
The original game was a love-letter to the kind of late-night horror schlock that was prominent throughout the eighties and nineties and this ethos seeped out of every rotting pore and orifice. The stunted dialogue, the paper-thin characters, the comically obvious and yet still shocking reveal of who the baddie was, all of it really helped sell the idea of Resident Evil being the video game equivalent of a B-Movie.
Further entries in the series, particularly Resident Evil 4 and the somewhat uneven Code Veronica, took this ethos to new heights with the inclusion of characters like Salazar and the Ashford twins. The debut trailer has promised us something along these lines with the inclusion of what appears to be Werewolves and Witches, but here's hoping they really lean into the camp and give us the kind of pantomime villains we've come to expect from this series.
