Though Fallout 3 and New Vegas are undoubtedly triumphs for the franchise with their excellent storytelling and roleplaying mechanics, it's fair to say that the gunplay in both games leaves an awful lot to be desired.

This isn't just evident when comparing them to new releases from the last few years, as even when viewed alongside their contemporaries, getting into firefights in the two titles just isn't as dynamic as it could be, leading many players to have to rely on V.A.T.S in order to gun their way out of a problem.

Bethesda was aware of these criticisms during the development of Fallout 4 and enlisted the help of renowned Doom developers id Software to make the shooting mechanics feel more akin to a proper FPS.

Fallout 4 director Todd Howard stated that the team had also taken inspiration from the shooting in the Destiny series, which admittedly lead to the best combat in the whole series.
