10 Things Your Favourite Video Game Developers Want You To Forget
6. Watch Dogs' Original (And Better) Textures Were Hidden In The Game - Ubisoft
No stranger to naff textures and graphical hiccups, Ubisoft have actually had a fantastic year for the most part, rejuvenating and enhancing everything from For Honor to The Division. That said, such a healthy mindset is most likely in direct response to how the French-born devs were labelled the bad guys for the majority of the generation.
And why? Because one of their biggest gaffs could've been completely avoided.
Watch Dogs' downgrade controversy dominated 2014, coming after the game had been delayed multiple times and seeing the version available to retailers being fundamentally less "pleasing" graphically, than what was advertised.
To that end, dataminers uncovered the game's original graphics and texture files on PC, going on to say that the game was completely playable at this higher resolution. This countered Ubisoft saying Watch Dogs couldn't run effectively with these enhancements, as clearly the PC version could "handle" a far more stunning set of visuals.
Following this, Ubisoft neglected to comment on the matter anymore, and Watch Dogs was forgotten, only occasionally discussed as one of the most disappointing games of all time.
