In the mid 2000s, the vast majority of the audience for the latest 'Tony Hawk's' game probably would have enjoyed nothing more than to live the life of their protagonist and become a worldwide skateboarding star. Travelling the globe to skate various competitions and off-the-cuff challenges was an absolute dream, but those main objectives weren't the only thing the game offered.

Progressing through each area depended on your ability to beat a requisite number of challenges, ranging from nailing tricks in certain areas to using your skills to collect the torn shreds of someone else's board from a rooftop.

Some of these challenges were so devilishly difficult that most players would have opted for other, easier ones in order to progress. Going back to collect all of the hidden items and nail the toughest challenges was gruelling, and the sheer volume of objectives on offer in certain areas was overawing enough to keep that elusive 100% completion mark way out of sight.

Suddenly, staying small-time and skating around your own neighbourhood doesn't seem like such a bad idea...
