Where most RPG experiences are grounded in progression of stats and attributes, the Monster Hunter series does things a little differently. Instead of assigning experience points and levelling up to improve, players in this series have to scour the lands for the materials and items to improve their equipment.

But if you feared that this different mechanic would take away some of the longevity of a typical RPG, think again. If anything, this type of grinding means that making your character the best of the best is even more time-consuming and challenging than the norm.

Since material drops are determined by various ratios and probabilities, it can take an absolute age to get to a point where you can end up with the weapon or item that you've set your heart on. Monster Hunter is a game in which collecting the right items is even more of a mammoth task than fighting the creatures themselves, but you're hardly going to stop without getting your favourite weapon, are you?
