10 Times Controversy Made You Discover Amazing Video Games

9. Mortal Kombat

Biggest Controversy: 'The kids' enacting out the violence within. Gaming went through a bit of a punk-rock phase in the 90's. Polygonal models were overtaking 2D sprites and developers were still applying their craft to a medium that was considered very much the underdog in relation to everything else. The general public were still sitting on the periphery of accepting gaming into their lives, leaving titles like Carmageddon, Road Rash and most notoriously Mortal Kombat to land with a bang, making waves so large it forced the media's attention to get involved. Okay, so on the face of it you're beating characters into bloody pulps and then extracting their bones directly through their skin, but how angry can you get with something that for all intents and purposes revels in its own obscene ludicrousness? It was the combination of gaming being thought of overall as a 'children's pastime' along with those doing the most talking having not actually played enough of the subject matter to know any better that stirred this up as much as it did. In the end the fact that the very idea of parental-influence was just done away with as though Mortal Kombat was being handed to young kids along with their morning cereal was just absurd.
