Although Wolfenstein 3D was technically the first FPS a year previously, it was Doom's viscera-caked debut in 1993 that really turned heads, putting you in the leaden boots of one 'Doomguy' and outfitting you with the now-iconic chainsaw, alongside a plethora of death-dealing weaponry. Like Mortal Kombat, the main reason people initially hopped aboard the hate train was down to the relentlessly macabre and counter-culture gothic imagery, which after the Columbine shooting had occurred and it was revealed that shooter Eric Harris' cited Doom as one of his biggest influences, lit the touch-paper for gaming to be the downfall of the emerging generation all over again. Naturally all this did was cement Doom as one of the founding pillars of FPS gameplay in general, with its signature 'floaty' gameplay feel being something that you can feel the ramifications of in titles as recent as Destiny.
