10 Times Controversy Made You Discover Amazing Video Games

7. Manhunt

Biggest Controversy: Implicated in an actual murder. The poster-boy for controversy and go-to for offensive titles - just the word 'Manhunt' will nearly always conjure up just as many affectionate displays of nostalgia towards its intense stealth sections and incredibly satisfying kills, as it'll send everyone else running for the hills questioning just why a game so focussed on gratuitous violence can be acceptable. It's not hard to see why Manhunt generated headlines worldwide, and as was the case with Doom here again it was linked to a real-world crime - albeit in a 'jump-the-gun-and-snatch-a-headline' way that only the press can get away with. The story went that murderer Warren LeBlanc was an avid fan of Manhunt's mutilation-based gameplay, and had attacked and killed one Stefan Pakeerah in a manner that resembled something from the game - using a hammer and knife in quick succession. After all was said, done and papers were sold, police reports emerged that it was actually the victim who was in possession of Rockstar's title, not the killer - and so pretty much every editorial from the time was rendered redundant, as was the debate around whether violent games inherently make people violent. For then, anyway.
