10 Times Controversy Made You Discover Amazing Video Games

5. Tomb Raider

Biggest Controversy: An implied rape scene. Many a human being has discovered enlightenment through a pair of chest-based love-lumps, and for what used to be such a male-dominated demographic, the arrival of Lara Croft in the late nineties was cause for en masse trouser-tentpole celebration. You'd have to contact Christopher Nolan and take a spaceship to a neighbouring galaxy to find someone who hasn't heard of Ms. Croft, but it's still worth pointing out just how much her pointers were the cause of her success, despite what lay underneath (steady on) was always an incredibly solid action-adventure. Original '96 Lara remains a fantastic game, but it wasn't the only one who was on the receiving end of some accusatory finger-pointing either, as when Crystal Dynamics rebooted the character in 2013 everything kicked off all over again. A particularly aggressive scene with the more human-shaped Lara saw one of the male island-dwelling aggressors bare down on her in a manner that many thought was implying rape - especially because at the time executive producer Ron Rosenberg mentioned as such, only to be taken back as a mistake. It then led to all manner of inquiries into the scene itself in relation to the newer, more refined and relatable direction the team were taking Lara. Writer Rhianna Pratchett mentioned that this idea of Lara's independence coming in the face of male oppression only worked if you watched the scene in context to understand her reactions, not just the intentions of the assailant.
