10 Times Controversy Made You Discover Amazing Video Games
4. The Grand Theft Auto Series
Biggest Controversy: Hidden code that gave way to a sex mini-game. Where to begin with Rockstar's series of cash machines? It seems with every new release of a GTA title they have to try that little bit harder to recapture the tabloid's fury all over again - so commonplace have the words 'Grand', 'Theft' and 'Auto' become in our society. But from Vice City's chainsaw kills to GTA V's torture scene and new first-person mode, the biggest of the lot in terms of sheer "They let you do what?!" reactions has to be San Andreas' 'Hot Coffee' mod; the one that got lawyer Jack Thompson's back up, and helped establish the series' notorious reputation. The beautiful thing was Rockstar had the perfect retort for all the allegations and implications of revelling in causing offence; the scene everyone was referring to wasn't even in the finished retail copies of the game - not without mods and some PC wizardry anyway. So as newscaster arms were flung skywards and uninformed parents lost their minds, everyone else got on with playing one of the best entries into a truly phenomenal franchise.
