When Final Fantasy 7 Remake finally arrived, it offered us the chance to revel in our memories of one of the most beloved video games of all time.

Returning to Midgar after more than 20 years was a prospect almost too good to be true for fans of the Final Fantasy series. It was a chance to reconnect with iconic characters and re-trace our steps through one of the most influential chapters in video game history.

It was one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the decade, let alone the year, and it delivered some of the most jaw-dropping gaming moments of 2020. Some of which we saw coming, others blindsided us completely, but each of them ensured this would become one of the most impactful games of the PS4 era.

Whether it was the sudden recognition of a specific location or an especially large wave of nostalgia brought on by that beloved soundtrack, FF7 Remake repeatedly slammed us with countless moments of elation and awe.

Suffice to say, Square Enix delivered on its promise to bring Midgar to life with a tirelessly faithful recreation enriched with relentless attention to detail and exquisite presentation.

10. The Zack Revelation

By the time you reach the end of FF7 Remake it’s clear that not all is as it was, and no matter how you feel about all the potential ramifications of that ending, the revelation that Zack might well be alive in this alternate timeline is a shocking development if nothing else.

The initial impact of the scene is enough to send your jaw through the floor, and it's immediately followed by a moment of reflection as you stop to think about what could possibly be in store for the rest of this remake.

This is the guy whose story helped to shape the events of FF7, and here we see that story being ripped to shreds and flagrantly cast aside. Yet, for all the astonishment, there's a twinge of excitement, too.

Zach is a fan favourite, that’s for sure, and any opportunity to spend more time with this charismatic hero is a cause for optimism.

What this could mean for the future of the FF7 Remake remains to be seen, but that only serves to extend our disbelief at what occurred at the end of part one and begin to hypothesise at what might be coming next.
