10 Times Lara Croft Went Too Far

7. Killing For Pandora's Box

Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life was the second Tomb Raider movie to star Angelina Jolie, and is often heavily criticised but it really does deserve much more love.

The film gives us lots of action set pieces and quite a modern take on Tomb Raider. It follows Lara as she teams up with an old ally and former love interest, Terry Sheridan, and goes on the search for the titular Cradle of Life which is home to Pandora’s Box.

When they finally reach the cavern where Pandora’s Box is held, Lara and Terry are the last two standing after the villain is dealt with. It’s here that Terry betrays Lara and tells her that he’s going to take the box, which leads to a tense stand off.

He tries to manipulate Lara by playing on their previous relationship. It’s a painful moment, enhanced by the stunning score by Alan Silvestri. Eventually, Sheridan pulls a gun and we hear the shot ring through the cave…but it’s Terry who falls down dead.

The moments that follow are utterly heart-wrenching as we see Lara stunned by what she’s done and horrified at the lengths she had to go to.

For a moment, she seems completely broken and she almost opens the box, but thankfully thinks better of it.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
