10 Times Lara Croft Went Too Far
4. Lara Is Forced To Kill Larson
Tomb Raider Anniversary was a beautiful remake of the original game. It expanded on the original story and helped make sense of some of the more obscure parts of the 1996 original. One of the best parts that we saw updated was Lara’s interaction with other treasure hunters Pierre and Larson.
In the original they occasionally popped up to shoot at Lara and didn’t really add much to the story. However, in this version, the character of Larson in particular, added a massive moral dilemma. In Natla’s mines he blocks the way and takes the fuse so Lara can’t get to her objective. He stands in her way and tells her how he’s sorry he had to do it but knows she won’t kill him, telling Lara “It’s not who you are.”
Lara replies “I’m not who you think I am,” and pulls out her guns. Larson gets ready to shoot her but Lara pulls the trigger first.
Players are then forced into a quick time event where we have to press the button to make Lara shoot her enemy and kill him.
It’s a painful and devastating moment that cleverly plays on Lara’s reluctance to harm someone, and only makes us feel worse because we made it happen.
