8. The Longest Ladder In Video Game History

One of the first instances of a drawn-out 'artistic decision' in an otherwise thrill ride-filled adventure, halfway through Snake Eater, Kojima had the bright idea of making you climb one gigantic ladder up a darkened tunnel for what feels like a good half hour. It wasn't such a crazy length of time of course, but the close to three minutes that you were left to simply push up on the stick as the game's theme echoed out around you ended up dividing fans straight in two. On the one hand the general adage of "That's so Kojima" tends to let the man get away with everything, but for the rest of us this was an overly long, arduously over-indulgent set-piece that seemed to suggest certain thematic traits about where Snake was at this point in the story, but didn't really do anything with them.
