10 Times Players Broke MMORPGs
7. In-Game Protests - Star Wars Galaxies
Protests became an ongoing part of Star Wars Galaxies’ communication between upset players and its developers.
The first was a simple dispute about there not being equal treatment of races when it came to new gear, and Wookies who felt left out all went to Space Ports en masse. So many characters in one area caused servers to buckle and Sony Online Entertainment took notice and bent to the players’ wishes.
However, in repeated demonstrations moderators weren’t as kind. After an issue with cloned currency that resulted in the bans of many innocent players, SOE actually started teleporting protestors out into space to keep the servers running.
The third and final act of defiance of the community was in the face of new game experiences that were set to completely change how the title functioned. Players sabotaged servers once more and, in a surely ironic and dark twist, moderators responded by spawning high level Stormtroopers to do their bidding and put their audience back in it's place.
Unfortunately however, the people were right and not long after the launch of the new game content most players left Star Wars Galaxies to find something else to play. Not only had the game changed for the worse, but the community's voices had cried out and been silenced.
