10 Times Pokémon Games Were Censored For Western Audiences

8. The Passed-Out Drunk

Pokemon Censored
Nintendo

In the original Pokémon Red and Green, if you attempted to head north of Viridian City before delivering a package to Prof. Oak, a passed-out drunk blocked the path.

In the western release, the man was slumped on the ground due to not having his morning coffee. Attempting to walk past him would only ignite his fury, causing the man to yell at you for trying to trespass on private property. Although his manners are sub-par, the man's granddaughter shouts back at him for being mean to the protagonist. The coffee explanation was also used for the Gameboy Advance remakes.

Regardless of the reason he was passed out, at least he offers to show you how to catch Pokémon to make up for his rude behaviour. It doesn't matter what point you are at in the game, the man will always be up for showing you how to catch Pokémon, so you can watch him procure a Weedle over and over again if it tickles your fancy.
