10 Times Video Game Developers Lied Straight To Your Face
6. Metal Gear Solid V's Demonisation Of Big Boss
Although director Hideo Kojima had insisted that every Metal Gear Solid game after the original was going to be his last, it really did seem as though he was going to use the fifth release to put a cap on the whole story. The pre-release trailers promised to chronicle the downfall of Big Boss, acting as the final bridge between the prequel titles and the modern-day sequels.
However, although MGS V is still very much Big Boss' story, it hardly delivered on the descent into hell the trailers were entirely focused on. Sure, he does a few questionable things and has to kill some of his own men, but his goals are always noble, and you never feel like you're controlling a bad guy. Combine this with the fact you're not even playing as the real Big Boss, and the whole premise just kinda falls apart.
Whether or not this story would have been followed through on had Kojima not departed the project is unclear, but that doesn't excuse why the game's story was so markedly different from the one suggested in its trailers.
