10 Times Video Games "Did Right By The Fans" (And Pissed Everyone Off)

6. (Mostly) Ditching The Cutscenes - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Though Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was largely lauded as a satisfying - and satisfyingly ridiculous - conclusion to Solid Snake's story, there were those who vocally complained that the cutscene-heavy storytelling hit excessively indulgent levels.

After all, the game's ending alone is over 70 minutes long, which while catnip to many fans of the franchise, left others feeling that Hideo Kojima was getting a little too high off his own supply.

And so, the long-awaited fifth game opted to redress this balance, but ultimately saw Kojima scale-back the number of cinematics to a disappointingly scant degree.

In the lead-up to MGSV's release, Kojima noted that the fourth game's lengthy cutscenes were divisive with players and critics alike, and so confirmed that the sequel's cutscenes would be shorter and less frequent.

And yet, one of the most oft-cited fan complaints about MGSV is that there simply aren't enough cinematics, and as a result the story feels disappointingly piecemeal compared to prior instalments.

The delirious charm of the series' signature talky, melodramatic cutscenes was sorely missed in MGSV, and along with the game's other missteps, left a large swath of the fanbase absolutely irate.
