2. Too Fat To Move Forward - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Realism in video games is often a dual-edged sword, as it brings authenticity and meaningfulness to the experience while also making certain components more frustrating than fun. Such is the case with 2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Ambitiously, it broke new ground in terms of character customization and RPG-like attributes. For instance, protagonist CJ can modify his haircut, clothing, accessories, and tattoos; alter his relationships with friends and love interests; and even increase his skills at driving, gunplay, lung capacity, and stamina.

CJ is also expected to exercise regularly and eat well; if he doesn’t, he will quickly gain a lot of weight. Whereas many other titles would merely change the look of the character without changing gameplay, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas goes a step further by portraying CJ as obese and negatively affecting his capabilities and opportunities.

Aside from moving slower, he’ll be unable to complete certain missions – such as those that require a jetpack – with alternate cutscenes depicting him being taunted by whomever he was trying to help. In addition, he’ll continuously be mocked by his friends (and even NPCs) for letting himself get so big.

Point taken, Rockstar Games.
