10 Times Video Games Brutally Trolled You

1. Fake Corrupted Data - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty

The Metal Gear Solid catalog is ripe with WTF scenes and mechanics, ranging from Psych Mantis controlling your console in the original to the Big Boss twist of MGSV: The Phantom Pain. Even so, it’s hard to deny that MGS2: Sons of Liberty’s most famous mindfuck of a misdirect is among the franchise’s most triumphant trolling.

Near the end of the game, divisive hero Raiden receives a codec call from Colonel Campbell – or, at least he thinks it’s the Colonel – telling him (in a distorted voice) to “turn the game console off right now.” After Raiden asks him for clarification, Campbell replies: “The mission is a failure! Cut the power right now! Don’t worry, it’s a game! It’s a game just like usual.”

Then, another AI replicant (posing as former friend/aid Rosemary) warns Raiden: “You’ll ruin your eyes playing so close to the TV.” Afterward, Campbell comes back and describes an incredibly bizarre incident involving “a glowing orange object in the sky.”

Obviously, it was one of several ways mastermind Hideo Kojima ridiculed players during their quest, and as with most of his legendary tricks, he pulled it off brilliantly. Let's just hope no one actually turned their PS2 off.
