10 Times Video Games Freaked Us Out With Fake Glitches And Cheeky Tricks
7. Animal Crossing - Mr Resetti
Animal Crossing fanatics will be very familiar with the ever-annoying Mr Resetti, but the very first time he appears came as quite a shock to many players. This fourth-wall-breaking character only appears when you turn off your console without saving the game.
We've all been guilty of quitting without saving, but most games don't punish us as directly as Animal Crossing! Like an angry parent scolding a troublesome child, Mr Resetti will promptly appear the next time you turn on your console or handheld device and give you a long-winded lesson about always remembering to save your game in future. The developers hoped that players would be annoyed having to get through all that dialogue and it might help them to remember to save in future.
The concept for the character actually came about during development. The designers noticed that playtesters were intentionally resetting the game and interfering with their console's system clock to take advantage of an in-game exploit and get new items at the local store. In order to prevent players from doing the same, the developers thought up Mr Resetti as a cheeky way to punish people from ever turning off the game without saving.
