10 Times Video Games Freaked Us Out With Fake Glitches And Cheeky Tricks
4. Eternal Darkness - Sanity Effects
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem was a gem of a game, offering an incredible psychological horror experience. Only released for the Gamecube, Eternal Darkness has developed a cult following of the years, and one of the things fans adore about it is the way it screws with their heads.
One of Eternal Darkness' unique features was the 'Sanity Meter'. It was essentially a kind of health bar that would go down as you encountered enemies. However, as the bar got lower, some very weird things would start to happen. Some of the effects were purely in the game world, but others actually broke the fourth wall.
For example, the player's TV might suddenly turn black, as if it got switched off, or a fake volume bar might appear at the bottom of the screen and start going down, sending you scrambling for the remote. Players also sometimes saw creepy fake bugs crawling on their screens and, perhaps most terrifyingly of all, the game would ask if you wanted to delete all of your save files whenever you try to save.
